The Truth About Sugar: Debunking Fear-Mongering and Focusing on Nutrition
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
Wednesday Jun 07, 2023
In this episode of The Balanced Dietitian Podcast, we talk about SUGAR and the stress we experience around food due to societal norms and our attachment of worth to certain foods.
We challenge the concept of food/sugar addiction and review how to increase balance in our nutrition.
I believe in a balanced and consistent approach to nutrition that focuses on adding rather than restricting.
Here's whats covered in this episode:
[00:00:05] Welcome to Balanced Dietitian Podcast where science and psychology combine to empower individuals with a better relationship with food and body for a better life.
[00:03:31] Food can become tied to self-worth, leading to a hierarchical system with certain foods seen as "better" or "worse". Diet culture has now merged with wellness culture, with sugar demonized as the worst thing to consume.
[00:06:57] Dieters may attach more worth to certain foods due to deprivation, leading to heightened emotional response and dopamine release. Importance of considering psychology and morality in relation to food.
[00:11:19] Don't fear sugar, focus on health-promoting behaviors. View nutrition as addition, not restriction. Stress around food is worse than the food itself.
[00:15:14] Assess your relationship with sugar and understand nutritional needs, especially for those with sensitivities.
[00:18:49] Dopamine release not indicative of addiction; restriction triggers addiction behavior in rats.
[00:23:46] Intuitive eating balances thoughts, emotions, and intuition with food. Anti-diet doesn't mean it's a free for all with food. It's still important to strive for balance and understand how food impacts our bodies.
[00:24:44] Podcast host invites audience on instagram to share thoughts on sugar and debunk diet culture. Aims to promote a healthy relationship with food to improve lives.
Conclusion: You can eat sugar. Sugar is NOT bad. Balance OVER restriction Everyday!

Nutrition Foundation
Wednesday May 17, 2023
Wednesday May 17, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian podcast.
I celebrated my birthday last week and I ended up taking the whole week off to celebrate! Growing up in a big household meant our house was always busy, so now that I’m a bit older, my birthday is an opportunity for me to spend the day doing things that I like, things that nurture my soul, and things that are fun and joyful; which meant getting out in nature this year. I get all of my best inspiration when I'm out in nature and connecting with myself, and I came back feeling inspired and excited to talk to you about the idea of having a Nutrition Foundation. It's something that can be a bit misunderstood when it comes to being anti-diet, so we’re diving into it on the podcast this week.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:
- Myths surrounding the anti-diet
- The importance of nutrition in the anti-diet
- The step by step approach to building nutrition foundation
- What is on our plate
- Intuitive Eating

Body Image Work
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Wednesday May 10, 2023
Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Balanced Dietician podcast. I’ve been feeling good the last few weeks! I always kind of forget how my mental health is impacted by winter until we get into spring again. Every spring I just feel like a different person.
It's really interesting because most folks who do the healing journey, to have a better relationship with food and their body, will experience something similar. When you have a not-so-good relationship with food, we kind of know it's not great, but we don't realize how bad it actually is until you've healed. When we can look back and just realize how things used to be, we realize how far we've actually come; pretty cool, right?
For most of us, our relationship with food wasn’t always bad. It started to get tricky we were trying to manipulate food in order to change our body. Body image is often the source of our food relationship issues.
So if we do the work to heal our relationship with food, but we don't do the body image work, it feels kind of like a bandaid solution; we're not doing the deep work that started the problem.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:
- The body positivity movement
- The body image spectrum:
Body respect, Body trust, Body neutrality, Body appreciation, Body confidence, Body acceptance, Body liberation

The Hidden Cost of Diets
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Wednesday May 03, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast; The place where we talk about all things, food, body, mind, and the anti-diet.
When I started to diet, I didn’t know the consequences of dieting. I didn’t know what would happen to my body, and to my mind. I didn’t know, because I was not informed properly. I was told that dieting was gonna make all my dreams come true and that I was gonna feel so good, and that's not actually what happened.
Do you know what actually happens to our bodies when you diet? Why does our body not like dieting? What can actually happen when you diet?
I believe in body autonomy. We can all do what we're meant to do and what feels best for us, but I also believe in informed decisions.
So today, I encourage you to get informed on the hidden costs of diets so that you can make the best decision for you.
In this episode, we discuss:
- The PROBLEM and the SOLUTION that diet culture has created
- Diets were designed as a short term solution
- How diets affect our Hormones
- Other bodily changes brought on by diets
- Weight is the least important part of us BUT it is a part of diet culture you need to know about

Food Psychology: How You Eat vs. What You Eat
Wednesday Apr 26, 2023
Wednesday Apr 26, 2023
Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I’m so happy that you are here with me today.
How are you doing, my friend? How are we feeling today? I was a little under the weather on this week’s podcast but I had to record this episode because it’s an important conversation!
We’ve made it to the end of April and the end of this Canadian winter. It’s starting to actually feel like spring now and slowly moving towards the summertime, which is really exciting. I know that this transition, period can often be difficult when we are healing our relationship with food and our body. There's a little bit more emphasis on bodies over the summertime, so I invite you to take a moment and just check in with yourself about how we're feeling about this new transition into summer. What thoughts do we have around food in our body as summertime is coming along?
Wherever you are in your healing journey, I invite you to check in with yourself on how we are feeling about it and join me today for a a conversation about food psychology.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Nourishing our body to feel good is important but HOW we eat is equally important
- How we feel about our relationship with food
- Feeling disempowered in our relationship with food
